Welcome to UC Divestment From Sudan

A silent genocide rages on in the Darfur region of Africa's largest country, Sudan. For the first time in history, the US government has declared that ongoing atrocities perpetuated by the Sudanese government against its own citizens amount to genocide, giving institutions like the University of California the impetus to act. Following on a rich history of socially-responsible decision-making, the University of California has the opportunity to condemn the Sudanese government by divesting UC funds from companies that support Sudan's actions. What is the UC Sudan Divestment Taskforce?

We are a group of students with the support of thousands of UC students, staff, faculty, and organizations as well as numerous endorsements from political figures, foreign policy experts, religious groups, and prominent Californian citizens. Our goal is to push the University of California Board of Regents to divest from certain companies doing business in Sudan that disproportionately contribute to perpetuation of the Darfur genocide. We are founded on the conviction that genocide represents the most heinous of crimes humans perpetuate on one another and that all organizations, governmental or otherwise, should do their part in acting against this crime. As one of the largest public universities in the world with a $64 billion endowment and with over $4 billion in foreign investments, the University of California wields a powerful tool of influence over Sudan: targeted divestment. Given Sudan's historical responsiveness to economic pressure, UC's investments in Sudan, and the University's moral obligation to act in the face of genocide, the UC Sudan Divestment Taskforce is working with the University to develop a Sudan Divestment Strategy which will be voted on by the full Board of Regents at their March 2006 meeting in Los Angeles.

The official university study group charged with development of a Sudan investment strategy will present its recommendations to the Board of Regents at their meeting on March 16th at UCLA's campus. This represents only the third time in UC history that the Regents have voted on divestment. Up to a thousand students from across the UC system are expected to be present.   UC Board of Regents delay vote on divestment but agree to definitive plan - 1/19/06
Inadequate research provided by the UC Office of the President precluded a vote on divestment by the Board of Regents at their January meeting. Nevertheless, the Regents did approve a plan to send letters of concern to the University's fund managers, form a task force (with UCSDT representation) to investigate divestment from direct and indirect holdings in offending companies, and present this plan for divestment to the Regents at their March meeting in Los Angeles. Importantly, the UC has committed to investigating divestment from both direct and indirect holdings in target companies, a significant step beyond the divestment decisions of Harvard, Stanford, and Dartmouth. Listen to Taskforce Co-Chair Adam Sterling, Congresswoman Linda Sanchez, and student Regent Adam Rosenthal discuss the decision on NPR. Read the Taskforce press release here.   UC Sudan Divestment Taskforce releases document on Options and Resources for Sudan Divestment - 12/24/05
On December 24, the UC Sudan Divestment Taskforce presented Joe Mullinix, UC Senior Vice President of Business and Finance, with an analysis on options and resources for Sudan divestment. Senior Vice President Mullinix has been charged with developing a Sudan divestment strategy to present to the UC Board of Regents at the January 18-19, 2006, meeting in San Diego. While the Taskforce developed this document to give the UC administration the broadest possible set of tools and options for Sudan divestment, the Taskforce hopes that the document will have use for other state and university divestment campaigns. Our report includes an analysis and list of contacts for most of the active Sudan divestment campaigns across the country. The report is available here. UCSDT press release available here.
